Try timing it to, "One and Two and.," where you're pressing the B-button to each word. You have to get yourself out of the button mashing mindset. Practice this one in Training Mode before you try it in a real match. Even more complicated is that you can very the second, third, and fourth slashes by pressing Up or Down with the B-button. It's a quadruple slash, and you have to hit the B-button (Note: after the initial slash, you can press the A-button if you find that more comfortable) for each separate slash. His Double-Edged Dance(Right/Left + B) is probably one of the most demanding attacks in the game, because it requires timing. Roy's most unique B-button attacks are definitely his Counter and Double-Edged Dance. It will also knock the attacker back farther. The attack is most powerful when Roy is touching (or very close to) his foe. It's best used in one-on-one matches where you're less vulnerable or when he's already high in the air. It strikes violently and high into the air, but leaves you temporarily vulnerable and without the ability to recover with jumps. Use it in combination with the Dragon Slayer and stand at the edge of stages to keep your foes off. The Flare Blade is, of course, yet another great move to keep opponents from jumping back to the platform.

If fully charged it will deliver an instant KO. His Flare Blade can be charged for an extended period of time to deal irreparable damage. Roy's special attacks are without a doubt some of his most powerful when used properly. You can fiercely juggle with Roy's sword if your timing is right. Link them together with ground attacks for deadly combos. His Up + A and Down + A air attacks aren't as effective as Marth's, but his forward facing and backward facing attacks are fairly strong. In the air, Roy's A-button attacks can be pretty powerful too. It acts as a very powerful trip, sending them flying up into the air. Also, don't underestimate Roy's Down + A (non-smash) Low Stab attack. Because it can be charged, it's a very powerful attack. You can use it to send your opponents flying off the platform and try to continually time it to keep pushing them away as they jump back. Once at the edge, you'll want to work on timing his Dragon Slayer smash (Right/Left + A). These slash attacks are also great moves for disorienting the other player and knocking them towards the edge. Try to time his slash attacks to strike closely if you want to knock opponents farther back. It's all about nailing them with the handle of the sword. Did you know that Roy's technique is completely opposite that of Marth's? When you strike your foe with Roy's blade, it is stronger the closer you stand to your opponent. His running Raid Chop, if activated from far enough a distance, will actually knock characters over his head and behind him, whereas his Forward + A Sharp Edge sends foes away from him. They should be treated differently because their effect is different.

You'll also notice that Roy has both a Forward + A upward swipe as well as a running Raid Chop. Unfortunately, it's not stronger than Marth's attack to compensate for its slowness.

As opposed to Marth, Roy's regular A-button sword slash is slow and only a one-part attack. We think his strength more than makes up for any disadvantages compared to Marth.įirst let's discuss his normal A-button blade slashes. He's stronger than Marth, and his only disadvantage is really that he can't jump as high or strike quite as quickly. With his sword, Roy has incredible reach and power. He's slightly slower than Marth and relies on his sword for all offense and defense. Gameplay Tips Roy is basically a more powerful version of Marth, also well trained in the way of the sword. matches and Roy will challenge you to a battle. Simply clear Classic Mode with Marth without using a continue or play more than 900 Vs. Roy, who is a clone of Marth, is a secret character and needs to be unlocked before you can play as him.
